Little Sunshines Homestead
‍

Little Sunshines Homestead is steadily-growing home to chickens and rabbits in Montana, and we were fortunate enough to catch up with owner Linsey Coleman as she shared some of her day-to-day with us. Montana's Big Sky watches over Little Sunshines, described by Linsey as a "place of peace," a way to "slow down and reconnect with what matters most."

Happy Hens and Raucous Roosters

Starting with a few chickens, Linsey quickly found herself adding to the family, with turkeys, quails, and rabbits joining the farm and steadily improving on animal health, safety, and comfort. One of Little Sunshines' most regularly-posted recent improvements have been their "chicken saddles," adorable-yet-effective hen protection from over-excited roosters.

‍

LSH also shares all kinds of neat process videos across their channels, along with all the cool products they use to keep everything in top shape, from nesting pads to natural pest control. Their philosophy is to "keep things simple," sticking with what works and adjusting as necessary.

Of course, we can't leave our tour of Little Sunshines without taking a look at their fluffy, high-energy rabbits, who need just as much love and care (and work!) as the rest of the homestead. LSH's rabbits chill in their regularly-cleaned enclosures, but will also build little grass nests of their own while in heat.

Meeting Challenges with FarmKeep

‍

Like every property, Little Sunshines Homestead faces endless challenges while raising animals. A visual person, Linsey makes use of FarmKeep on mobile and web, particularly enjoying the breeding tools and our calendar.

"FarmKeep helps us keep all our homestead records in one easy, accessible place. We use it to track our animals, breeding plans, hatch dates, farm reminders, and important notes so we can make informed decisions and stay organized. Instead of taking a clipboard and paper out with me every time I check our animals, I simply pull up my phone, write notes, and check dates all in one place."

Plus, it's just fun to use! "It's really fun to see my animals and their pictures on the app," she says, "I smile every time I'm on that tab."

‍

‍

One of her more unique goals has been trying to get a spread of beautiful egg colors, especially the gorgeous green that star chicken Bubbles lays! Of course, Linsey is also showing lots of love to the other animals on the farm, especially growing their rabbit program, and making tons of great educational posts to show the joy of homesteading.

‍

‍

For other farmers, especially those new to this life, Linsey has some humble, down-to-Earth advice:

"Start where you are, and don't wait for the 'perfect' setup. Every experienced famer and homesteader started as a beginner. Focus on learning, keep good records, and remember that mistakes are often the best teachers. Small, consistent improvements over time add up to big results."

FarmKeep sends their love and thanks to Linsey and Little Sunshines Homestead for their time and the great virtual tour! Be sure to check out Little Sunshines Homesteads on all their social platforms, linked here!
