FarmKeep: Our Journey to Self-Sufficient Farm Management

In 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, we left the SF Bay Area and moved to Sacramento to live a more hands-on, self-sufficient life. We started small — just a few birds, a garden, and a lot to learn. Over time, we expanded into quail, chickens, turkeys, geese, rabbits, and ostriches. (You can follow our farm journey at @hoofandclawranch)

Along the way, we connected with an incredible community of homesteaders, hobby farmers, and family-run operations — all working toward healthier food systems and more resilient ways of living.

But we also noticed something most of us had in common: Keeping farm records was hard. Paper notebooks, spreadsheets, calendars, memory — it added up fast, especially as flocks grew.

With input and guidance from other farmers, and our own daily experience managing the farm, we began building FarmKeep — a simple, practical tool designed for farmers, by farmers (who also happen to know how to build good software).

We’re still learning every day, and we build FarmKeep in collaboration with the people who use it. Your farm isn’t just the inspiration — it’s part of the process.
