"From roller girl to rancher, who knew?"
It's the text that reads on my personal instagram bio. My IG handle is still my nom du guerre from when my life was spent on eight wheels, but now my profile is filled with pictures of cows, chickens, goats, and open pastures.
In 2019 I retired from roller derby and in 2020 I met my husband. Over the last 5 years we've evolved into farmer/ranchers, almost by accident, or shall I say, destiny? He had the cows and the land, and I brought the inspiration of growing our own food (and having cute animals, of course). Next thing we knew we were building coops, chicken tractors, and paddocks, waking up early to feed the meat chickens, and trying to keep track of which cow had what calf.
Lucky for us, FarmKeep came along when we needed it most; a growth year. Keeping track of all the Spring calves and goat kids on the app has helped us immensely. Knowing when we've given supplements and medicines to the animals, hatch dates, and keeping records on milk production from our Nubian goats... all in my back pocket? Incredible! I can shout from the kitchen to my husband, "Honey, will you add 64 chicken eggs to FarmKeep?" and he's able to update our totals through the app while drinking his coffee. We're able to see everything all in one place!
In 2024 we attended our first farmers markets, and now in 2025 we have joyous local support of our farm with regular customers looking forward to buying their weekly beef, birds, and eggs from us. Over the next year we've got lots of plans - whether we'll complete all of them is another story, but with FarmKeep it's making all these tasks much more manageable. We're growing our pasture-chicken operation, and working toward growing our micro dairy so that I can make all the cheese! It's an exciting time to be a farmer because there seems to be a health-minded renaissance a-brewing, and folks are wanting to know where their food comes from and to know their farmers. Heck yeah!
